Jupiter is the easiest planet to spot and observe visually. It is the largest planet in our solar system that happens to be relatively nearby (778 million km on average) which makes it a gorgeous target. The planet has (at least) 95 moons, 4 of which (the Galilean moons) are easily spotted by telescope: Io, Callisto, Ganymede and Europa.

The planet is what we call a gas giant: it has no solid surface. The atmosphere of Jupiter is estimated to be about 3000 km thick, mainly composed out of hydrogen and helium. The surface of the planet shows multiple bands, storms and vortices. The Great Red Spot being the most famous of storms on Jupiter.

Jupiter is simply astounding to look at. Depending on conditions and timing it is perfectly possible to see the Great Red Spot. Bands around the planet are clearly distinguishable from others.

I feel like I have some nice pictures of the planets and its 4 Galilean moons, however these absolutely do not do the visual observation justice. If anyone gets the chance to look to Jupiter through a telescope: please do! It’s awesome!
