It is well known for the impressive set of rings that have formed around the planet. The average distance to Saturn is 1.4 billion km, about twice as far as Jupiter. The planet has (at least) 274 moons (!), with a few of them being contenders for life in our solar system: Enceladus and Titan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gas giant has an atmosphere composed mostly out of hydrogen and helium. It&#8217;s rings are believed to be composed of mostly water ice, with particles up to 10m in size. They extend to about 127 000 km while being only about 20m thick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at Saturn can be challenging: it is quite small in the eyepiece. The banding on the planet is more subtle than the banding on Jupiter, but still visible. The rings are, sadly, currently perpendicular towards our point of view. This means that instead of seeing the the rings in all their glory, we only see a small band. The gap between planet and rings is still quite visible though. In two years we will have full view of the rings again so expect more by then!<br><br>I tried my best to get some pictures but they did not turn out well. The size of the planet in the eyepiece, combined with a cheap phone camera overexposes the planet, so only a very bright sphere is visible.
